Dark Age Of Camelot was one of the best PVP based games of its time. With a free for all PVP server named Mordred, players of all factions could group together and fight each other anywhere in the game besides the 3 main cities. Travel was made very easy with portals and horse routes. Unfortunately Mythic Entertainment ran the game into the ground and all but ignored any plees from the Mordred players to boost population. Mythic Entertainment all but forgot about DAOC while working on their new MMO Warhammer Online.
In its prime, Dark Age of Camelot had amazing PVP, great PVE including multiple alternative advancement paths after reaching level 50 including a quest based master level path, Champion levels based on experience and quests, and realm ranks based on pvp points accumulated. They also have artifact items in which you would need to complete a quest to gain an item, and then find 3 scrolls to unlock the items abilities. Once the abilities were unlocked for the item, the item itself would level up and gain attributes as you gained it experience by killing certain monsters or players. The realm rank system was very customizable as it did not include any type of tree based advancement, you could choose to spend your points on any and all skills available in the skill pool, some skills costing more obviously depending on how powerful they were. Relics were another aspect of this game, and were available in the PVP frontiers of camelot for all to fight over, and defend and fight for in their guild or factions keeps.
They also have a great website (camelotherald.com) that keeps track of servers status, realm status including keeps and relics owned and realm points earned overall, per week, and per class. This was a great way to see who the top players and guilds were for each class, and for each week.
