Based in space, this MMO has users interacting with other players in a gigantic universe of 5000+ systems, each of which contains many planets and moons. The game is very in depth in terms of what a player can do, and develop skill sets. Players can become miners, manufacture ships and sell them, run in game missions, kill NPC pirates in asteroid belts, become pirates and kill other players, or all of the above.
Players train skills on and offline, and the skill trees are very in depth. These skills progress to become more powerful, or help the player advance to larger ships. Since there is no “leveling through EXP” or skill point assignment, users can train any aspect of the game they wish at any time.
The game is FFA PvP, full loot (depending on what items survive a ship being destroyed), and even player death in the event their “pod” is killed and they have no clone. Systems are rated by security, 1.0 being the highest, and 0.0 being “Low Sec”. NPC police forces enforce each system, and their presence decrease as the security of a system decreases. A player’s hostility to the police depends on several factors.
Players can modify their ships any way they please, with a large selection of guns, missiles, ammo types, drones, shields, armor, and electronic warfare. Ship types range from shuttles, to Battleships, and beyond. Money to pay for ships and items can be obtained through NPC quests, where faction rating determines what level quest can be requested, to mining, manufacturing and selling items on the market. As well, destroying other player ships and looting their fittings can be profitable.
In game money can be used to buy game time, and vice versa through an established system in account management, making giving players an easier way to buy ships, or other players incentive to make more money to play for free.
The learning curve for this game is quite steep, as it is in depth and very complex. Being able to train skills offline makes the need to play a lot less, although you can sometimes feel that you are paying for nothing. Missions are repetitive, although the evolution of the levels ensures player can make money and progress to larger ships. Large corporations (Guilds), can focus on anything or everything, and are usually required to see larger end game ships / extreme wealth.
